Hallelujah Tab

by Brandi Carlile

Rufus Wainwright's version of this song is in the key of C, but Brandi plays it in G
and tweaks the verse and chorus just a bit. This is not on her album, but she plays
it live at some shows.

Guitarists should toy around to see which D chord works best for the song.
I'm using something close to Dsus on my banjo.

1st:

I’ve heard that there’s a secret chord

That David played and it pleased the Lord

But you don’t really care for music do you?

It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lifts

And the baffled King composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
               ---
Hallelujah, hallelujah

2nd:
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you

She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

3rd:
Darling I’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room, I’ve walked these floors
You know I used to live alone before I knew you

I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Oh yea…

5th:
There was a time when you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?

And remember when I moved in you
The Holy Dark was moving too
And every breath you drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

6th:
So maybe there’s a God above
But all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you

It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
               ---
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
               ---
Hallelujah, hallelujah
